Pottery Classes (for Ages 8+)

Please note, Fall Session II Pottery Classes will be held for 5 weeks (weeks of Oct. 23rd - Nov. 27th) as we will be using the ceramics studio space during the month of December to begin prepping for our upcoming move.

(Psst... our new space has a fantastic ceramics studio and kiln room!)

About Pottery Classes: We're thrilled you're interested in a pottery class at Tinker! Wheel throwing is a wonderful skill for children to learn and practice. Through the process of the wheel spinning and using our hands in wet clay to form vessels, we find that throwing on the pottery wheels is just the right mix a meditative process and new challenge for children. Most children get very hooked on throwing after just a couple of classes!

Class Options: We offer two classes of Wheel Throwing 1, two classes of Continuing Wheel Throwing, and one Continuing Wheel Throwing + Hand Building class.

Which class should my child take?: If your child is throwing for the first time, or if your child has taken Wheel Throwing 1 only but it has been over one year since their class, they should take Wheel Throwing 1. If your child has taken Wheel Throwing 1 within the last yearor Continuing Wheel, (our no longer offered) Wheel Throwing 2, or Children's Advanced Wheel Throwing with us at Tinker, they are welcome to join one of the Continuing Wheel Throwing classes.

Class Structure: As we have 6 pottery wheels and classes are limited to 5 - 6 students, each child works on their own wheel, which allows the children to work at their own pace in an independent fashion. Therefore, our pottery classes are very conducive to children who are working at different levels to benefit from others in their class, and to continue advancing their skills at their own pace through teacher support and mini-lessons tailored to the individual's and group's needs.

Please Note: If you are signing up with friends, we recommend communicating in advance about which session you are interested in joining so that your students get into the same class. Please reach out to us at tinker@tinkerartstudio.com if you have any questions or if we may be of further help in any way.

Learn how to throw on the pottery wheels! Wheel throwing is a fun and exciting medium for children to create functional artwork. After children learn how to center the clay, build the floor of the pot, and pull the walls, they will experiment with building bowls, altering the form, and more.

All pieces will be fired and glazed with dinnerware safe glazes--suitable for eating or drinking out of, or putting into the dishwasher and microwave. We will hold an art show during the last 10 minutes of the final class on November 28th. Some pieces will be available to take home after the art show, and the remainder will be ready to pick up 2 weeks after the last class. Class size is limited to 6 students.
