Learn how to throw on the pottery wheels! Wheel throwing is a fun and exciting medium for children to create functional artwork. After children learn how to center the clay, build the floor of the pot, and pull the walls, they will experiment with building bowls, altering the form, and more.
All pieces will be fired and glazed with dinnerware safe glazes--suitable for eating or drinking out of, or putting into the dishwasher and microwave. We will hold an art show during the last 10 minutes of the final class on May 22nd. Some pieces will be available to take home after the art show, and the remainder will be ready to pick up 2 weeks after the last class. Class size is limited to 6 students.

We are thrilled to offer this class for Tinker’s continuing wheel throwers. (Please read below for more information about required prerequisites). In this class we’ll be challenging children to hone in their personal pottery style and advance their skills through continued practice, mini-lesson demos, and independent projects of their choice. Please note that Continuing Wheel + Handbuilding (Session A) also includes support for children who would like to handbuild in addition to wheel throw. We will hold an art show during the last 10 minutes of the final class on May 21st (Continuing Wheel A) and on May 24th (Continuing Wheel B). Some pieces will be available to take home after the art show, and the remainder will be ready to pick up 2 weeks after the last class. Class size is limited to 6 students.

About Pottery Classes: We're thrilled you're interested in a pottery class at Tinker! Wheel throwing is a wonderful skill for children to learn and practice. Through the process of the wheel spinning and using our hands in wet clay to form vessels, we find that throwing on the pottery wheels is just the right mix a meditative process and new challenge for children. Most children get very hooked on throwing after just a couple of classes!
Class Options: We offer two classes of Wheel Throwing 1, one Continuing Wheel Throwing class, and one Continuing Wheel Throwing + Hand Building class, as well as one Teen Wheel class.
Which class should my child take?: If your child is throwing for the first time, or if your child has taken Wheel Throwing 1 only but it has been over one year since their class, they should take Wheel Throwing 1. If your child has taken Wheel Throwing 1 within the last year, or Continuing Wheel with us at Tinker, they are welcome to join one of our Continuing Wheel Throwing classes. If your child is 14-17 years old, they should take our Teen Wheel class, regardless of any past Wheel Throwing experience. This will be a mixed-levels class.
Class Structure: As we have 6 pottery wheels and classes are limited to 6 students, each child works on their own wheel, which allows the children to work at their own pace in an independent fashion. Therefore, this class is very conducive to children who are working at different levels to benefit from others in their class, and to continue advancing their skills at their own pace through teacher support and mini-lessons tailored to the individual's and group's needs.
Please Note: If you are signing up with friends, we recommend communicating in advance about which session you are interested in joining so that your students get into the same class. Please reach out to us at email@example.com if you have any questions or if we may be of further help in any way.
- A minimum of 3 students must be enrolled in order for class to be held. We will notify you if your class might not run due to low enrollment.
- Payment is due in full at time of registration. The Materials Fee is a non-refundable deposit. In the event of a cancellation, tuition will be refunded up to 10 days prior to the start of class. Within 10 days of the class start date, class tuition is non-refundable.
